AMBUSH HAVE A BLAST SATURDAY AT FAMILY ARENA

by Jim Fossell

Saint Charles, Missouri (January 20, 2024) – The St. Louis Ambush scored early and often in their match against the Baltimore Blast Saturday evening at The Family Arena. The Ambush pulled off an 8-3 win to improve to 2-7-2 (wins-losses-overtime losses) on the season, while Baltimore fell to 4-5-0.

The Ambush scored first, courtesy of Wil Nyamsi off a pass from Lucas Almeida, in the eleventh minute of the first quarter. The Blast evened the scored when Adriano Dos Santos put a shot high and out of reach of Ambush goalkeeper Paulo Nascimento in the fourteenth minute of the period.

St. Louis went up 2-0 in the seventh minute of the second frame when Robert Kristo headed the ball into the crossbar, followed his own rebound, and pounded it into the net. The Ambush pulled away with three goals within two minutes. Richard Schmermund scored, followed by Lucas Almeida and Wil Nyamsi’s second of the contest to make it 5-1 at halftime.

Marcel Berry and Sam Guernsey scored just over a minute apart in the fifth and six minutes of the third stanza to increase the Ambush lead to 7-1. St. Louis’ James Togbah went on a breakaway and was able to beat Baltimore keeper Quantrell Jones in the seventh minute to make it 8-1.

The fourth quarter remained scoreless until the seventh minute when Baltimore’s Jesus Pacheco took a shot that was blocked by Schmermund, who inadvertently tapped it into the goal, giving the visitors their second tally of the evening. With the sixth attacker in play for Baltimore, Tony Donatelli scored to make it an 8-3 match. The comeback for the Blast would prove to be insufficient, as the Ambush held on for the win.

The Ambush will escape the St. Louis winter when they play two games in California next weekend. They visit the San Diego Sockers Saturday, January 27 at 9:05 p.m. CT at the Pechanga Arena San Diego, then face the Empire Strykers Sunday January 28 at 6:05 p.m. CT at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.
