AMBUSH HOST RIVAL COMETS IN HOME OPENER FRIDAY

by Jim Fossell

St. Charles, Missouri (November 26, 2021) – The St. Louis Ambush and Kansas City Comets open their 2021-22 Major Indoor Soccer League seasons with back-to-back games this weekend. On Friday night, the Ambush host the Comets in a 5:05 p.m. affair at the Family Arena. On Saturday, both teams journey west for a rematch at 6:00 p.m. at the Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence.

These two Missouri teams only met twice during the abbreviated 2021 season, with each team posting a win. The Ambush and Comets will clash six times during the 2021-22 regular season, with each team hosting three games on their home turf.

The biggest offseason change for the Ambush was on the bench, with Greg Muhr replacing Hewerton Moreiro as Head Coach. This is Muhr’s first season coaching in the MASL and Friday marks Muhr’s first regular season game at the helm of the Ambush. He enjoyed a playing career that spanned nine seasons before embarking on his coaching career.

Among the notable players returning for the Ambush are last season’s points and goals leader Vadim Cojocov (nine goals, four assists), Tony Walls (nine goals, three assists) and Lucas Almeida (three goals, nine assists). Another notable returnee is defender Stefan Mijatovic, who led the league last season in blocked opponent shots with 21. Stefan also contributed offensively, finishing the season tied for second on the team in goals scored (eight), and tied for third in points with 11.

The Ambush start the season with the goalkeeping situation in flux. Starting keeper Paulo Nascimento is out for the season recuperating from a torn ACL. Rafael Dias, signed during the offseason, has been unable to gain a visa. One of the two remaining keepers on the roster, either Josue “Sway” Mazon or Chris “Tito” Favela (or both) will be pressed into service early in the season.

Player/coach Leo Gibson returns for the Comets along with a talented squad that includes Lucas Sousa, Adam James and Rian Marques. Besides earning high marks for his work on the bench, Gibson also remains one of the top offensive threats in the MASL on the turf.

Following this weekend’s pair of games, the Ambush travel to Texas to tangle with the Dallas Sidekicks on December 4, then return home to the Family Arena to welcome the Milwaukee Wave to the Family Arena on December 19.
