by Jim Fossell

St. Charles, Missouri (November 13, 2021) – The St. Louis Ambush finished preseason action with their second win in as many days when they defeated the Wichita Wings 8-6 at the Family Arena Saturday night.

Wichita got on the board first when Kevin Ten-Eyck scored on a restart. With less than two minutes remaining in the period, Colin Lanter beat Ambush goalkeeper Sway Mazon to increase the Wings’ lead to two. The Ambush answered, on a rocket by Mo Ndiaye, with 13 seconds on the clock to make it a 2-1 game at the end of the opening stanza.

The Ambush drew even with just under five minutes remaining in the second quarter when Stefan Mijatovic beat Wichita keeper Aaron Parrot. Just over a minute later, Ado Jahic found the back of the net to give St. Louis a 3-2 lead that held until the halftime buzzer.

At 1:55 of the third stanza, the Ambush offense exploded with goals from Vadim Cojocov, JT Thomas and Triston Austin in less than a two minute span. Four more minutes elapsed before the home team struck again, this time on Ado Jahic’s second tally of the night. Wichita bounced back when Taylor Henry posted a goal with 4:05 left in the quarter. The Ambush notched the last goal of the period when Lucas Almeida scored at 14:50 to give his team an 8-3 lead.

David Lucio got a shot past St. Louis goalkeeper Fernando Cortes at 1:11 of the fourth quarter to reduce the Ambush lead to 8-4. Wichita chipped away at the lead on Ten-Eyck’s second tally of the contest with 6:24 remaining. The Wings continued the comeback when Christian Lima scored less than two minutes later to make it 8-6, but it would prove to be too little too late, as the Ambush held on for the win.

The game concluded the Central Cup preseason tournament. The Ambush and Kansas City Comets each won two games. The next tiebreaker was head-to-head, but the Ambush and Comets didn’t face each other in the tourney. The next tiebreaker was goals against in the tournament. Kansas City allowed four, while the Ambush allowed eight, so Kansas City takes home the Central Cup for the 2021-22 season.

The 2021-22 regular season kicks off at home for the Ambush on Black Friday, November 26, 2021, when the cross-state rival Kansas City Comets invade the Family Arena for a 5:05 p.m. CST duel.
