AMBUSH SIGN MIDFIELDER JULIO VARELA

St. Charles, Missouri (November 27, 2024) – The St. Louis Ambush have signed free agent midfielder Julio Varela to a two-year deal, the team announced today.

The 2024-25 season will be the sixth in the Major Arena Soccer League for Varela, who has played with the Turlock Cal Express (2019-20), Dallas Sidekicks (2021, 2021-22), Florida Tropics (2022-23), and Texas Outlaws (2023-24). In 61 regular season MASL games, he has tallied 29 goals, 20 assists and blocked 21 opposing shots. Varela also has postseason experience, having appeared in the MASL playoffs with the Sidekicks, Tropics and Outlaws.

Varela hails from Watsonville, California. He played collegiate soccer at Hartnell College in Salinas, California and Cal State Montery Bay in Monterey, California. Prior to college, Varela played one year of prep soccer at Watsonville High School in his home town, where he helped the team win the 2014 CCS Championship and was named Homestead Cup tournament MVP. Prior to high school, he also played at the club and academy levels throughout his formative years.
