RICHARD SCHMERMUND RETURNS TO AMBUSH

St. Charles, Missouri (July 13, 2020) – One of the original members of the current St. Louis Ambush franchise is coming home. Free agent defender Richard Schmermund has signed a  three year deal, the organization announced today. Per league and team policies, no further details have been disclosed.

Schmermund is a local product who grew up in Ferguson, Missouri. He played prep soccer at McCluer High School and club soccer for Scott Gallagher and Lou Fusz. Schmermund’s collegiate career was spent at St. Louis Community College, where he was awarded First Team All Conference.

Prior to joining the Ambush, Richard played professionally with the Illinois Piasa (PASL). Schmermund joined the Ambush for their 2013-14 inaugural season, his first of five seasons with the club, leaving as a free agent following the 2017-18 season. Schmermund spent the 2018-19 season with the Orlando SeaWolves. After starting the 2019-20 season with Orlando, Schmermund was traded to the Baltimore Blast, where he finished the season. In 125 career games, he has posted 48 goals and 24 assists while blocking 109 shots.

Ambush Head Coach Hewerton said, “Since leaving the Ambush, Schmermund has matured and gained experience playing for different organizations and it’s time for him to come home and help make our roster stronger.”

Schmermund welcomed the opportunity to come back to the Ambush saying, “I’m excited to be playing in my hometown and can’t wait to play in front of the best fans in the MASL.”
