Schmermund Earns MASL Team of the Week Honor
St. Charles, MO (December 20, 2016) – St. Louis Ambush defender Richard Schmermund has been named to the Major Arena Soccer League’s Team of the Week for Week Eight of the 2016-17 regular season.
As a defender, Schmermund displayed great two-way ability, helping on both offense and defense in the team’s December 18 loss to Cedar Rapids. From the back line, Schmermund helped to keep Cedar Rapids forward Gordy Gurson without a goal for only the second time this season. He also added a goal and an assist to his team’s efforts.
The 2016-17 season is Schmermund’s fourth with the Ambush. He is a St. Louis area native who grew up in Ferguson. He played prep soccer at McCluer High School and club soccer for Scott Gallagher and Lou Fusz.
Schmermund’s collegiate career was spent at St. Louis Community College, where he was awarded First Team All Conference. Prior to joining the Ambush, Rich played professionally with the Illinois Piasa (PASL). Schmermund appeared in 14 games for the Ambush in 2013-14. He contributed five goals and 13 blocks. During the 2014-15 campaign, "the Schmerminator" registered seven goals and two blocks in 15 games played. Schmermund appeared in all 20 games last season (2015-16), tallying four goals, six assists and 11 blocks.
The Ambush return to action when they host the division and cross-state rival Kansas City Comets in a New Years’ Eve matinee Saturday, December 31 at 1:05 p.m. Single game and group tickets are available for all remaining home games.
